What Is Therapy?

Therapy is a journey which often starts from current unhappiness or dissatisfaction with a part of your life.

People come to me when they feel stuck and in need of change, but they don't know how to get there. Some examples include feeling stuck in:

  • a depressive or anxious state

  • a relationship that isn't bringing you joy anymore

  • a previous identity that no longer fits how you see yourself

  • reliving painful memories from the past that affect how you view and interact with the world today

As your psychologist, I serve as a guide in helping you become “unstuck.”

The goal of psychotherapy is to solve current problems, as well as understanding what lead to their development. We will explore how your previous experiences influence your current behavior patterns and how you relate to the world. We will understand how these patterns continue to persist negatively in your life and influence your view of yourself and others. In couple’s therapy, we examine how these same patterns and newly created ones affect your relationship.

Through therapy,  you will come to understand which patterns work, or don't work, toward happiness.

With this type of therapy, you will have understanding of how to best change unhealthy perceptions and behaviors. This process will leave you feeling empowered and more satisfied with life.

My therapy is rooted in a psychodynamic, multicultural and interpersonal foundation. However, I also incorporate techniques from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), solution-focused therapy and emotion-focused therapy. I view the individual as a whole person, understanding that your family, community, culture, ethnicity, spirituality and vocation impact the therapeutic process.
